International Dairy Foods Association report sheds light on Americans’ favourite ice cream flavours and consumption habits. America’s favourite ice cream flavours vary depending on who you ask – ice cream makers or consumers. While chocolate, vanilla, and cookies n’ cream ranked in the top three for both groups, strawberry and chocolate chip rounded out the top 5 for consumers, and mint chocolate chip and strawberry for ice cream makers.

The most popular nut flavouring is pecan, the most popular fruit is strawberry, and the most popular confection is a brownie. Chocolate remains the most popular topping sauce, beating caramel 26% to 18%. Nuts and sprinkles are the most popular dry toppings, 15% and 14%, respectively. Waffle cones beat sugar cones 32 to 12% among consumers, but 37% prefer to eat their ice cream out of a bowl. The survey also revealed that July is the busiest month for ice cream production, with May and June following closely behind.

American consumers consume approximately 23 pounds of ice cream and frozen desserts yearly. The majority of consumers eat ice cream as a treat. More than half of consumers also eat ice cream to satisfy a sweet tooth or as a dessert. Consumers still look for indulgence when eating ice cream. Thus, ice cream manufacturers offer premium and super-premium ice creams in a wide selection of flavours and toppings like cookies, brownies, candies, and cakes.

The survey clearly shows that Americans have a strong liking for ice cream. It also indicates that the industry supports nearly 30,000 jobs and generates $13.1 billion in economic activity. According to Fortune Business Insights, the global ice cream market is expected to reach $97.85 billion by 2027, up from $71.52 billion in 2021, a 37% increase.
